A further 71 new projects, an additional 135 billion HUF – the Government has made its decision on EU funded priority projects29 November 2007

The government approved 258 priority developments in July 2007, and a further 71 projects have been approved today. A total rate of European Union funding of nearly 135 billion HUF will be used for, among others, the construction and rehabilitation of thermal spas used for remedial tourism purposes, restoration of the national monuments in regal cities, the completion of further roads, the continuation of hospital developments, developing Záhony, Europe’s gateway to the east, into an economic centre; in addition, substantial amounts will be used for the development of the e-administration network providing convenience for citizens.

Priority projects are major investments, which, due to their national and/or regional significance, cannot be included within the scope of any of the calls for applications, which is why the government decided on approving these on the basis of special rules of procedure. (156 calls for applications have been published so far; the rate of funds available for commitment is equivalent to nearly 1200 billion HUF.)

The government currently carried out the evaluation of 100 projects on the basis of recommendations made by the independent professional jury and the opinion of the Steering Committee for Development Policy; a further 47 developments will be assessed during January. Decisions on approval, further development and rejection were made.

Some of the approved projects target tourism development, such as, the development of Bük Thermal Spa, construction of National Monument and King’s Promenade in Székesfehérvár, reconstruction of the Máriapócs Basilica or the development of the Nyiregyháza Zoo.

As regards the rate of funding and economic significance, from among the funding, the infrastructure package underpinning the economic development of Záhony and its region is explicitly prioritised, following the implementation of which the town may become Europe’s gateway to the east. Transport developments will continue, within the framework of which Margaret Bridge will be restored, in addition to carrying out the restoration of a substantial number of secondary roads mainly is disadvantaged regions (such as Ormánság).

Some of the projects that have just been approved target the development of e-administration, whilst there is also a sufficient rate of funding available for the continuation of hospital developments that have already commenced.

Having made this government decision, the fate of nearly 330 projects exclusively depends on when project hosts will have the necessary plan documentation ready and the date when it will be possible to conclude the assistance contract with these project hosts.
