Easier Transport in Salgótarján 6 October 2008

The traffic decongestion road in Salgótarján was completed with the help of funding granted by the National Development Plan and was handed over by the Minister for National Development and Economy Mr Gordon Bajnai on 1 October.

Due to the characteristics of the town, the investment costing 6.2 billion HUF is not a bypass road, but will instead redirect traffic running previously along Road 21 through less densely populated areas. The Móricz Zsigmond Road flyover is a special feature of the investment: so far only one such similar reinforced concrete bridge has been built in the country.

Salgótarján can breathe again, since the investment that has just been completed will reduce traffic along congested Road 21 by diverting vehicles through less densely populated areas. This new road is 3.1 km long and a 1 km-long service road has also been constructed along the road.

It was necessary to build 6 roundabout junctions, 7 bridges (1 railway bridge, 2 monolithic public road bridges, 4 beam bridges), creek coverings along a 400 meter stretch, abutments and footpaths due to unique local characteristics (diverse terrains of the densely populated town situated in a valley; railway track running in the vicinity of the alignment of the road). The Móricz Zsigmond Road flyover is a special feature of the investment: so far only one such similar reinforced concrete bridge has been built in the country.

The new road runs alongside residential buildings and crosses railway lines along one stretch, which is why special attention needed to be paid to construction work carried out along the above section.

The investment costs a total of 6.2 billion HUF; 75% of this is covered by EU funding granted within the framework of EPIOP (Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Operational Programme).
