Renewal of the Southern District of Jászapáti has been Completed 8 October 2008

Prime Minister Mr Ferenc Gyurcsány inaugurated the Folk Art House and Information and Trade Centre on 3 October in Jászapáti.

The southern district of Jászapáti was renewed with the help of funding of over 430 million HUF in value granted within the framework of the National Development Plan. 4 unused properties in a rundown state owned by the local government were reconstructed within the framework of the project; these buildings will now assume a community, service and economic function. Beyond the reconstruction of the buildings, a bicycle road and footpaths were built, public lighting and a video surveillance system was installed, public utilities were developed and parks were created for public use in the area.

The Local Government of Jászapáti was approved EU funding of over 387 million HUF for the rehabilitation of the southern district of the town within the framework of the call announced by the Operational Programme for Regional Development of the National Development Plan. Own funds of 17.2 million HUF ensured by the local government and nearly 26 million HUF approved within the framework of a tender call announced by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development made it possible to implement the investment costing over 430 million HUF.

The local government-owned unused properties that were in a rundown state became suitable for accommodating community, service and economic functions in the life of the town following the completion of the renewal and reconstruction work and after having fitted these buildings with new equipment and installations. Full handicap access is ensured to the renewed buildings.

The building accommodating the Civil Community Club and Project Office was also renewed; paved footpaths were built on an area of 5600 sqm in the town and a vast part of the sprawling green zone of the town was also upgraded and improved. Local non-profit organisations, such as pensioner clubs and foundations, will operate in the Civil Community Club and the Jászság Micro-regional Local Association will use the Project Office.

The old cinema building was converted into a Folklore House; artistic groups operating in the town will be able to move into this building (folkdance workshops, heritage conservation groups, the Rokolya Sewing Workshop making folk dresses).

The old cultural centre has been converted into an Information and Trade Centre. The Tourinform Office, the IT Centre, the network of local farming experts performing regional tasks, as well as a non-profit environmental protection association will operate in the building.

The building used for breeding chicken at the turn of the 20th century was also renewed and converted into a Human Development and Employment Centre. Employment of disabled persons will begin in the Centre in October; in addition, bridging training courses will be organised for disadvantaged residents of the settlement.

A street surveillance system has also been set up within the framework of the project. Altogether 10 cameras have been installed in the downtown precinct, as well as areas frequently visited by tourists. Experiences over the past period have been positive, which is why a further 5 cameras will be installed to monitor the streets of the town in November with the help of funding approved within the framework of another call.
