Environmentally-friendly Waste Treatment in Győr 4 November 2008

The assistance contract of the waste treatment major project was signed in Győr on 28 October in the presence of Mr Csaba Molnár, State Secretary of the Ministry for National Development and Economy.

Waste management in Győr and its surrounding region will be modernised with the help of the funding of 6.5 billion HUF in value granted within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan. The quality of the environment of 112 settlements affecting 260,000 residents will improve with the help of the investment aimed at setting up a selective waste collection site, reducing the volume of biologically decomposing waste and establishing conditions for safe dumping.

339 waste collection points, 42 waste yards, 2 transfer stations and 1 sorting plant will be set up within the framework of the project; consequently, access to selective waste collection bins will be ensured in every settlement. 90,000 waste collection bins will be placed in the area, a regional composting plant will be built and 500 composting boxes will be provided to help domestic composting. 30 special waste collection vehicles will hit the road and a 1.2 million m3 capacity dump site ensuring the safe placement and disposal of the remaining volume of residential solid waste will be built. Over 42 regional recycling bases and 1 training centre will be set up to reduce the production of waste.

The development covering a total of 2500 km2 in the process of being implemented in the West Pannon region (Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Komárom-Esztergom County and Veszprém County) facilitates the appropriate recycling of packaging waste by means of community selective waste collection, i.e. by setting up collection bins, waste yards, recycling bases and a regional sorting plant. A regional dump site and treatment plant will be built in Győr-Sashegy to ensure the safe placement of waste.

As a result of the investment, it will become possible to recover approximately half of the collected waste and use – following transfer - 10% of the waste collected for energy purposes by 2016.

EU funding of 6.5 billion HUF has been granted to implement the project costing an overall 9.5 billion HUF. Construction work was launched this summer by commencing the building of the Sashegy dump site and treatment plant; the construction of the transfer stations and waste yards and setting up selective waste collection bins will commence at the beginning of next year and will be completed by spring 2010.
