Upgrading the Embankment below the Lapidarium in Dunaújváros 2 March 2009

The stabilisation of the embankment below the Roman lapidarium in Dunaújváros is to be completed as a priority project within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan. The assistance contract worth over 275 million HUF was signed on 19 February.

The development of the embankment at Dunaújváros has now become vital to complete, since the technical quality of the existing river-bank protection has become so outdated that its current state endangers the public and residential buildings of the town, as well as its infrastructure. In Dunaújváros, the Danube embankment is an integral part of the municipal area of the town: promenades lined with trees, residential and public buildings rising over these, as well as public roads and utilities all lie in this area. The Roman castrum has been damaged due to surface movements; any further damage would cause incalculable losses to cultural and historical heritage, which is also why its protection is extremely important.

The intervention will be implemented by taking a consolidated approach in line with a coordinated and complex engineering programme covering the entire area in need of protection and by taking advantage of the results achieved by modern environmentally- and energy-conscious construction techniques of the modern era (sustainable construction). The aim of the development is to establish and implement safe energy-efficient structures that correspond to the requirements of today’s modern era.

The specific objectives of the project are: stabilising the embankment below the Roman lapidarium and restoring and conserving the damaged drainage pipeline, transport and historical structures. Final stabilisation and ensuring the safety of the high ground in the vicinity of the lapidarium have finally been made possible within the framework of the priority project granted funding from the New Hungary Development Plan.

The modernisation and stabilisation of the lapidarium and structures beneath these relics, as well as stairs, pavements and the water drainage system will be completed with the help of this project. The operating costs of the existing river protection wall will decrease and operating safety will improve through the construction of new energy-saving modern pumps and winches.

Moreover, by implementing this project, environmental loads will from now on decrease, environmental safety will improve in the town and potential accident hazards are also expected to decrease. Last but not least, it is also possible to save a substantial amount of electricity by upgrading existing river protection structures and outdated equipment.
The project will have a major impact on the region’s economy, since drawbacks associated with the collapse of the embankment will be eliminated and the investment will contribute to creating and retaining a substantial number of jobs. Ensuring safe transport in the town along the high ground areas of the Danube is the basis for the successful continuation of economic activities.
