Inner City to Be Renewed with the Help of EU Funding24 April 2009

The foundation stone was laid and the assistance contract for the development of the new high street in the inner city of Budapest was signed on 23 April.

A prominent part of the 5th District of Budapest will be completely renewed with the help of EU funding of over 1.9 billion HUF within the framework of the Heart of Budapest Programme. This will not only make the inner city more attractive for tourists, but will also create a more liveable environment for the district’s residents by reducing car traffic.

The local government of the 5th District known as the Inner City Lipót (Leopold) District is launching an urban rehabilitation programme worth nearly 5.5 billion HUF with the help of EU funding. The area lying between Kecskeméti Street and 6 October Street intersecting Szervita (Servite) Square and Erzsébet (Elisabeth) Square will be entirely renewed as a priority project of the New Hungary Development Plan and a new high street will be created in the historic district.

Kecskeméti Street, Egyetem (University) Square, Károlyi Mihály Street, Petőfi Sándor Street, Bécsi Street, Erzsébet Square and 6 October Street will be connected and new pavement will be laid along these streets as a part of the urban rehabilitation programme worth a total of 1.9 billion HUF to be mostly implemented from EU funding. In addition to the new high street to be developed in accordance with the above, new pavement will be laid, new public lighting will be installed and potted plants will be placed to decorate the narrow streets adjacent to the new high street.

Residents living in the district and tourists visiting the area will be able to use the new high street of the Inner City Lipót (Leopold) District made more liveable by this time next year as an outcome of one of the most significant EU-funded developments in the life of the district.
