Investment Worth One Billion HUF at the Sewage Treatment Plant in Dunakeszi 9 November 2009

Mr Imre Szabó Minister of Environment and Water laid the foundation stone of the investment to be implemented at the sewage treatment plant in Dunakeszi with the help of funding amounting to nearly 1.1 billion HUF.

The operator of the plant, namely, Danube Waterworks Co. (DMRV) was approved EU funding amounting to 600 million HUF for implementing this development, for which the company is providing own funds amounting to 414 million HUF. The Ministry of Environment and Water and the Central Directorate for Water and Environment are also supporting this development by providing 70 million HUF. As an outcome of this project, the sewage treatment plant will discharge treated sewage that satisfies threshold limits defined by the European Union.

"The aim of the green ministry is to ensure a safe and clean environment and healthier life in Hungary. In order to achieve this, the ratio of households connected to the sewage network has been continuously improving over the past 7 years, increasing from a ratio of 56% to 70%, representing some 700,000 households, as a result of which the number of households connected to the sewage network now nearly reaches 3,000,000," emphasised Mr Imre Szabó, Minister of Environment and Water, at the project kick-off ceremony held on 6 November in Dunakeszi.

The Minister said that nearly 10,000 kilometres of new main sewer pipelines have been built since 2002, as an outcome of which the sewage network now exceeds a length of 40,000 kilometres in Hungary, which is equivalent to the length of the Equator. EU funding made available through tenders announced within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan help implement this programme. Funding amounting to 380 billion HUF has been made available for supporting sewage disposal and treatment projects during the 2007-2013 period within the framework of the Environment and Energy Operational Programme (EEOP).

"According to the national sewage programme conforming to EU requirements, by 2015 100% of the sewage collected in the network may only be discharged into an outlet after undergoing biological treatment and approximately 90% of households will be connected to the network at a national level" added Mr Imre Szabó.

DMRV is implementing its developments envisaged at the sewage treatment plant inDunakeszi with the help of funding provided from EEOP. The operator of the plant, namely, Danube Waterworks Co. (DMRV) was approved EU funding amounting to 600 million HUF for implementing this development costing nearly 1.1 billion HUF, for which the company is providing own funds amounting to 414 million HUF. The Ministry of Environment and Water and the Central Directorate for Water and Environment are also supporting this development by providing 70 million HUF.

Once these developments are implemented, the sewage treatment plant in Dunakeszi will also be capable of treating sewage deposited at the plant at below set threshold values, since de-nitrification technology (used to remove nitrate) will be available, the capacity of the site will be extended and foul odours engulfing the area from time to time will be eliminated. A new 3000-m³-volume ventilation structure, new final sedimentation tank and new sludge dehydration machine house will be set up, disinfection of the treated sludge by using a new system will be ensured, a sludge pre-filter will be introduced and certain facilities will be transformed due to technological changes within the framework of this project. These developments will be implemented by September 2010 and trial runs will be completed in spring 2011.
