Rehabilitation and Spa Hospital in Harkány Renewed10 November 2009

Two hospital buildings were fully renewed and equipment was replaced using funding amounting to 733 million HUF, of which nearly 129 million HUF was covered by EU funding.

Energy-saving measures were implemented, the insulation, as well as doors and windows were replaced and heat regulation systems were introduced at the hospital with the help of Community funding. Environment and Energy programmes are among the high priority interventions of the European Union.

The hospital in Harkány, which is the second biggest institution in the country treating patients with rheumatic and locomotor conditions and provides treatment for some 5,000 patients each year, has been operating for the past 50 odd years by relying on the medicinal waters in Harkány; the hospital currently has 280 beds.

The Zsigmond Vilmos Rehabilitation and Spa Hospital in Harkány implemented the most significant healthcare investment of the past few years in the region, which was uniquely coupled by the transformation of the ownership structure and the development of high standard professional and scientific work, which should have a beneficial impact on the economy of the entire region in the long run.

In the first phase, Building "A" of the hospital, which is over 100 years old, was renewed within the framework of an HRDOP project costing a total of 1.35 billion HUF with the help of funding amounting to 966 million HUF. The second phase of the investment programme was allocated a budget of 733 million HUF, within the framework of which, Buildings "B" and "C" of the hospital were fully renewed and equipment was replaced. The renewal of the balneotherapy building, the former Ilona Bath, is also currently in progress, which investment can only be implemented in phases on account of the need to maintain ongoing operations.

Therefore, the renewal of Building "B" of the hospital, which is 55 years old, could begin in July 2008 with the help of the EU funding made available. 41 3-bed rooms, 6 medical consulting rooms, the full treatment and community services complex, as well as the service infrastructure was renewed in the building

The building satisfying requirements of the modern era was opened to patients in December 2008. The renewal of Building "C", which is 35 years old, commenced in June 2009 as the second phase of the project. Doors and windows, as well as the facade insulation were replaced, alongside the renewal of 60 2-bed rooms and 9 consulting rooms. Moreover, an additional 15-bed inpatient ward was also developed. Every ward that was transformed was developed into a 2-bed room with an adjacent bathroom and Internet access.

According to the professional programme, it will be possible to treat patients with rheumatic and locomotor conditions and provide post-surgery and post-accident rehabilitation in the renewed wings. Thanks to the opportunities offered by the medicinal waters in Harkány, it is also possible to treat various skin diseases, as well as chronic gynaecological problems. The hospital will primarily provide treatment for patients arriving from the South Trans-danubian region within the framework of locomotor rehabilitation; however, it will provide treatment for patients arriving from any region around the country, or even foreign countries in the case of skin diseases and gynaecological problems.

The project host does not consider this implemented investment to be the final stop, but instead takes this as the beginning of something, which, according to the intentions of the project host, will be followed by further developments.
