Lake Tisza Eco-centre to Be Implemented from Funding Amounting to 2.2 Billion HUF27 November 2009

The Lake Tisza Eco-centre to be constructed in Poroszló will be implemented within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan with the help of funding amounting to over 2.2 billion HUF.

Hungary’s second biggest lake and its surrounding region is unique in terms of eco-tourism, and by setting up this centre, it will not only be possible to strengthen the protection of natural values, but the relevance of tourism in the Lake Tisza region will also increase, hence creating favourable conditions for investors interested in investing in the Lake Tisza region.

This project costing over a total of 2.2 billion HUF to be implemented with the help of EU funding amounting to 1.9 billion HUF is a rarity in Hungary, as well as at a European level. The visitor centre to be set up on an area of 2600 m2 within the framework of this investment will offer high standard services - among others, a 726,000-cubic-litre freshwater aquarium exhibiting typical aquatic and waterside species living in the country and the region. A 3D viewing room and a conference room capable of accommodating 100 persons will also be created in the building. A recreation park and fishing stages with handicap access will also be set up within the framework of this development, in addition to 12 tourist trails with GPS waypoints for tourists keen on hiking, cycling and canoeing.

The visitor centre will also accommodate the headquarters of the Poroszló Water Police unit and, beyond its use for tourism purposes, it will also be possible to place the Lake Tisza storm warning device on the tower of the building.

Hungary is able to invest EU funding amounting to 300 billion HUF in tourism development up to 2013. 11 applications submitted from the settlement of Poroszló have so far been approved funding through calls announced within the framework of the first National Development Plan and the New Hungary Development Plan. The settlement has been granted funding amounting to a total of nearly 2.3 billion HUF.
