Baja Residents Breathe Sigh of Relief - Bypass Road Completed17 December 2009

The next phase of the road bypassing Baja has been completed and was opened to traffic on 16 December. This development is the second phase of the construction of road stretches along Highway 51 and 55 bypassing Baja implemented in 3 phases.

Highway 51, constituting the north-south axis in Bács-Kiskun County running adjacent to the Danube, and Highway 55, creating connections among southern regions, used to run through the centre of the town of Baja where more than 37,000 residents live. This project is the second phase of the construction of road stretches (Highway 511 and 551) along Highway 51 and 55 bypassing Baja implemented in 3 phases. By linking up with phase I/A and I/B completed earlier and through the implementation of this project, northeast bound traffic on highway 51 will completely bypass residential areas, hence substantially reducing environmental damages inflicted upon the municipal area and the downtown precinct of Baja and improving traffic safety.

The route with two junctions (the roundabout along Highway 51 and the left-turn slip lane at Mártonszállási Road) bypasses the municipal area, although it runs in its vicinity. By constructing this nearly 3-kilometre-long road stretch, northeast bound traffic now completely bypasses residential areas, hence reducing environmental pollution in Baja and contributing to ameliorating living conditions for residents. Reinforced dirt roads running parallel to the area closed off on account of road works, the vast majority of which is under agricultural cultivation, will be constructed to access this area.

This 1.2 billion HUF investment was implemented with the help of EU funding amounting to over 900 million HUF within the framework of the Transport Operational Programme.
