Billions in EU Funding for Healthcare Development – Assistance Contract of the Pole Hospital in Szeged Signed18 January 2010

8 pole hospitals will be developed with the help of funding amounting to more than 80 billion HUF made available within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan.

The 12 billion HUF assistance contract concerning the construction of the new block of the healthcare centre in Szeged has just been signed. By constructing this complex healthcare block, the inpatient centre currently operating with 385 beds will be enlarged and developed into a 650-bed service facility, where, among others, it will also be possible to integrate the full range of high standard medical services provided for treating heart and vascular disorders.

The University of Szeged, one of the most popular higher education institutions in the country, has been ranked among the top 500 universities in the world for many years. The university is one of the leading cultural, economic and intellectual hubs of the South Great Plain region, as well as the country.

The immediate aim of this gigantic project to be implemented in the southern unit of the healthcare centre in Szeged and launched with the help of owns funds amounting to 1.2 billion HUF relates to setting up a pole hospital providing progressive, patient-centric services where even higher standard medical services to those provided at present will guarantee professional treatment. This new complex clinical block will house several special professional areas, such as, general and invasive cardiology, haematology, internal medicine angiology, stroke treatment, general and heart surgery, vascular surgery, pulmonary and thoracic surgery, as well as organ transplant surgery.

Major developments and centralisation will be implemented as a part of this project in the case of the two leading causes of premature death, namely, heart and vascular disorders. Beyond the numerous modernisation developments, 8 brand new operating theatres, a 36-bed intensive care unit and central sterilisation ward will also be set up by extending and renewing the facilities used at present.

"Having signed the assistance project, a unique and exemplary healthcare project can now get underway, which will largely contribute to developing medical services offered in the South Great Plain region. Construction work is scheduled to begin in spring 2010 and the new clinical block is expected to be opened to patients by autumn 2012", highlighted Professor Dr Gábor Szabó, Rector of the University of Szeged, on the occasion of the signing of the assistance contract.
