Two Kindergartens and Two High Schools to Be Renewed in Szombathely from EU Funding Amounting to 500 Million HUF22 March 2010

The assistance project underpinning developments implemented by the Municipality of Szombathely was ceremoniously signed on 18 March, enabling the launch of the renewal of four educational institutions in the city with the help of EU funding amounting to nearly 500 million HUF.

Funding amounting to 105 billion HUF has been made available up to 2011 within the framework of the NHDP National School Renewal Programme, enabling the implementation of 365 projects. This ensures the opportunity to renew numerous outdated, run-down kindergarten and school buildings and set up quality educational institutions. The most significant kindergarten and school renewal programme of the past 50 years is being implemented within the framework of NHDP.

Renewal works will soon commence at two kindergartens and two high schools in Szombathely, since the assistance contracts that have just been handed over pave the way for launching these developments. Beyond the present investment costing 500 million HUF to complete, a further two public educational institutions, namely, the Derkovits Gyula Primary School and the Mocorgó (Grumpy) Kindergarten, also received EU funding over the past period, as an outcome of which unprecedented developments in the field of education will be implemented in the city.

Losonc Kindergarten will be transformed with the help of funding amounting to 43 million HUF. The building facade will be insulated, the toilet block, heating system, stairways and floor coverings will be upgraded, a gymnasium and changing room will be created and doors inside the building will be replaced within the framework of infrastructural developments. Moreover, full handicap access will be ensured on the ground floor and a separate parking lot will also be created.

The Szűrcsapó Street Kindergarten is the other institution to be renewed, where introducing energy efficient systems is also one of the most important upgrades to take place. All windows and doors in the kindergarten will be replaced, the facade will be renewed, the entrance will be transformed, several toilet blocks and changing rooms will be renewed and a gymnasium room will be constructed with the help of funding amounting to over 68 million HUF approved to complete this development. The entrance to the building will be transformed and full handicap access will also be ensured to the building. Covered light-weight pergolas and mobile screens will be added to the group rooms facing the courtyard.

Beyond buildings accommodating the youngest age group, two high schools will also be upgraded, one of which is the Nagy Lajos High School housed in a protected building constructed in the 20th century. Windows and doors will be replaced, the facade will be insulated, the roof structure will be renewed, toilet blocks, as well as floor, wall, stairway coverings and the electricity network will be upgraded with the help of funding amounting to 199 million HUF approved to complete this development. Alongside ensuring full handicap access, a real community space will also be created for students.

The Vocational School of Commerce and Catering will also be transformed with the help of funding amounting to 190 million HUF. The school building and student hostel will be insulated and renewed; windows along the external front of the building will be replaced and toilet blocks will be upgraded. Moreover, external public utility connections will be upgraded, the stairway coverings will be repaired, full handicap access will be ensured on the ground floor and a separate parking lot will also be created.
