Developments Worthy of Urban Status Implemented in Balatonfűzfő from EU Funding29 March 2010

The Municipality of Balatonfűzfő has been approved non-reimbursable funding amounting to 99 million HUF under the call “Upgrading the townscape in small settlements” announced within the framework of the Central Transdanubia Operational Programme (CTOP).

A new library was created; the cultural centre was in part renewed and handicap access has been ensured to the building, as well as the entrance hall on the ground floor and toilet blocks; the green area surrounding the building was revitalised and the Town Hall in Balatonfűzfő was also partially renewed within the framework of the project bearing the title “Value increasing and functional development of the Fűzfő industrial site district in Balatonfűzfő”. The settlement celebrating its 10th anniversary of being awarded town status this year, has been approved non-reimbursable EU funding amounting to nearly 1 billion HUF over the past three years within the framework of CTOP, and most recently 139 million HUF for developing Föveny (Sandy) Plage. One-third of the funding approved for this settlement has been invested in the development of the industrial park zone.

In her welcome speech, Mrs Major, Zsuzsanna Kiss, Mayor of Balatonfűzfő highlighted that the project that has just been completed represents a milestone in the life of the town, since this was the very first major investment for which the town managed to secure a significant amount of EU funding. According to the Mayor, the renewed library will from now on be able to satisfy the demands of visitors at a standard worthy of the settlement’s status as a town. This investment cost a total of 110 million HUF to complete.

The following was said at the official handing-over ceremony: the funding needed to carry out the infrastructural development of the institution was granted from SIOP, thanks to which an audio library and induction loops help readers, a telehouse has been set up and interlibrary or Internet loan services are now also available.

The renewed institution also managed to procure library furniture from funding granted by the National Cultural Fund.

In his welcome speech, literature historian Dr Mihály Praznovszky recruited new readers for the library and talked about the importance of books, as well as the significance of the work of librarians.
