Szentendre Town Centre to Be Renewed from Nearly 2 Billion HUF31 March 2010

Developments costing a total of 1.92 billion HUF to complete will be implemented in Szentendre by next spring. The main square and its environs will be renewed; Dumtsa Jenő Street and Malon Street will be transformed, similarly to a part of Bogdányi Street and a stretch of Bükkös Stream.

The Tourinform office will be transformed and the missing wing of the Art Mill, representing unique values in this micro-region, will be renewed. The Local Government of Szentendre has been approved EU funding amounting to 900 million HUF for carrying out this investment.

Urban rehabilitation and the renewal of various urban districts play an extremely important role, both socially and economically. If urban rehabilitation is not carried out, local governments may face major problems tying in with real estate financing, the real estate market and their respective budgets. Luckily, more and more settlements, including Szentendre, have come to realise the need to renew certain districts and eliminate social problems arising in these areas.

Construction work at kindergartens in the process of renewal also began within the framework of the Szentendre 1000 Years+ programme series on 24 March. The renewal of the 4 concerned kindergartens in Szentendre is being implemented in phases and is expected to continue up till the end of August. Handicap access will be created to these buildings, which will also be adjusted to cater for the needs of physically disabled and visually impaired children. The kindergarten rooms will also renewed, much to the joy of children attending these institutions; a new gymnasium will be set up in three of these kindergartens and their gardens will also be made prettier.

Construction and preparation work tying in with several other developments are also well in progress in Szentendre. Major progress is expected to be made this year in the case of the reconstruction of the medical centre, the renewal of the flood protection embankment, as well as other investments implemented within the framework of the Szentendre 1000 Years+ programme.
