EU Funding Amounting to Nearly 300 HUF for Developing Emergency Care Services at the Hospital in Balassagyarmat14 April 2010

Through the series of calls aimed at raising the standard and improving the efficiency of emergency care services announced within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan, emergency care units at 26 hospitals in Hungary may evolve into European-standard modern centres.

One of these is the Dr Kenessey Albert Hospital Clinic, which institution has been granted EU funding amounting to nearly 300 million HUF for developing emergency care services. The assistance contract underpinning this investment has just been signed.

The Dr Kenessey Albert Hospital Clinic in Balassagyarmat ensures medical services in the medical district covering the western region of Nógrád County. As a municipal hospital, it provides services for a total of 85,000 residents, although it is also responsible for providing medical services for 220,000 residents at a county level. The hospital provides medical services in 12 medical fields, on a total of 636 beds in 12 wards reserved for active inpatient care and 7 wards reserved for chronic inpatient care. The hospital treats approximately 17,000 inpatient cases per year, whilst nearly 300,000 patients use services provided at outpatient healthcare centres. In spite of this high number of patients, up till now, only emergency medical services could be provided at this hospital.

The single window system will be introduced at this institution with the help of EU funding within the framework of the project that is about to be implemented; this means that a single “window” will be set up in this institution to admit every patient seeking emergency care. The emergency care unit will evolve into a regional and professional unit capable of admitting chronic patients every day of the week and around the clock, where suitable material and personnel conditions will be available for stabilising the state of emergency patients and medical staff will be on standby around the clock to treat critical patients.

Thanks to this development, a helicopter landing pad will also be created within the framework of infrastructural developments carried out at the Emergency Care Unit in Balassagyarmat, which is expected to be completed by summer 2011; the area of the Emergency Care Unit operating at present will be increased by 181 square metres – alongside which a further 116 square metres in other units will be upgraded – and 28 various high-value equipment procurements will also be carried out.

The level of organisation, management and efficiency will improve by developing emergency care services. Ensuring well-organised patient transfer both within the hospital and between institutions, better organised medical services and applying standard guidelines – these are the most relevant professional guidelines and results of developments implemented from EU funding.
