Development of Emergency Care Services at Balassa János Hospital in Tolna County to Commence15 April 2010

The development of the emergency care unit at Balassa János Hospital in Tolna County will be carried out within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan with the help of EU funding amounting to more than 521 million HUF. Emergency care units in 26 hospitals around the country will evolve into European-standard modern medical centres by summer 2011 thanks to funding granted by the EU.

The Balassa János Municipal Hospital in Tolna County is the largest healthcare service provider in the county. As a central hospital, this institution plays a key role in providing services for residents living in this county in the field of emergency care. The fundamental aim of this project, costing nearly a total of 590 million HUF to complete, relates to raising the standard of emergency care services provided in Tolna County. Raising the standard of the emergency care unit in this hospital from level SO2 (Emergency Care2) to level SO1 (Emergency Care1) includes the introduction of a single window system and ensuring ongoing services for patients. A part of these developments involves carrying out equipment procurements essentially needed for providing rapid diagnostics and treatment in the case of urgent interventions.

It is not possible to set up an emergency care unit with a single window system integrating every medical field where this emergency care unit currently operates; moreover, it is neither possible to find a solution for decreasing the large distance between the operating theatre and the diagnostics unit and the CT, nor the way in which these operate on different levels. The location of this unit in the grounds of the hospital is not suitable either, since it has been accommodated in the building farthest away from the main entrance.

The emergency care unit satisfying every professional expectation pooling all diagnostics and connecting medical services in a single location, and easily and directly accessible from the street front will be set up on the ground floor of the central surgery block of the hospital and by extending this area.

Beyond ensuring the material conditions needed, the objective of this project equally involves providing staff training, re-organising staff capacities and establishing closer relations with partners. The direct target group of this development, i.e., residents living in settlements in Tolna County, exceeds 235,000 individuals.
