Tourism Attractions Developing in Szeged20 May 2010

Two tourism projects have just been implemented in Szeged within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan. The European Union contributed funding amounting to a total of 3 billion HUF towards the renewal of the swimming complex called Napfényfürdő (Sunlight Bath), which cost in total 8 billion HUF, and 600 million HUF towards the development of the hotel Hunguest Hotel Forrás (Hunguest Hotel Spring).

A new top quality swimming complex larger than the old one, where guests have the opportunity to use medical wellness services, regenerate, have fun and actively relax within a single facility welcomes every age group from 19 May at the site of the former swimming pool located at the foot of the Inner City Bridge in Szeged on the New Szeged side.

Besides the slippery dip theme pool built in 2006, a new 27 000-m2 indoor facility with open-air and indoor features has been constructed. Beyond a range of special facilities offered in this new indoor theme pool (whirlpool, cascades, slippery dips, etc.), the longest waterslide in Europe descending from a 30 metre-high tower and open all year round is accessible via a lift in the indoor area. In addition, 7 various slippery dips await sliding enthusiasts from the gallery level up. Wellness services that were not available earlier, namely, saunas, aromatic and salt chambers, dry-air and wet steam chambers, spas and massage pools, as well as relaxation (quiet) zones have been created as a part of this development. The wellness pool consists of an indoor and outdoor pool linked via a swimming corridor. A 0-40-cm-deep family swimming area has been created for babies and 1-6 year olds in this swimming complex.

A larger capacity, higher quality considerably more modern and better organised medical wellness services centre than the one available earlier has been created for treating and rehabilitating locomotor disorders as an outcome of this development. A day hospital with 14 double rooms with adjoining bathrooms - which is unique in Hungary - has been built in the medical wellness block as a new service within the framework of this project.

The outdated facilities of the swimming complex have been renewed and new changing rooms, a toilet and shower block, as well as a children’s pool are now available for guests. A considerably higher number of employees will work in this new complex; moreover, employees are expected to be hired by enterprises providing services for the Napfényfürdő swimming complex. The tourism boom in this city will create further jobs in companies providing services in Szeged and its environs. This investment costing over 8 billion HUF to complete is a development impacting the entire country, as an outcome of which the Napfényfürdő Aquapolis Szeged swimming complex may evolve into one of the key attractions of the Southern Great Plain region for every age group and the pillar of tourism development in this region.

The total net value of the project called “Development of the Hunguest Hotel Forrás” amounts to 2.1 billion HUF, of which 600 million HUF is funding granted by the European Union. The 3-star hotel was fully renewed within the framework of this project, as an outcome of which a new 4-star spa and wellness hotel welcomes guests. An entirely new wing accommodating a conference centre was built as a part of the functional and external renewal of the building. Rooms were fully renewed and equipped with top quality installations; apartments and suites with a Jacuzzi and/or fireplace offering an exceptional experience were created, and the reception area and restaurant were transformed and renewed. Spacious twin bed rooms, family rooms, as well as rooms with disabled facilities for guests with special needs are equally available among the 196 air-conditioned rooms offered at this hotel.

Tourism is prioritised as regards making use of funding granted by the European Union. Over a 3-year period, 142 projects explicitly geared towards tourism were granted EU funding amounting to a total of 31 billion HUF between 2004 and 2006 within the framework of the National Development Plan. About ten times this amount, i.e., nearly 300 billion HUF, has been made available for developing the tourism sector within the framework of the New Hungary Development Plan.
