Historic Inner City of Székesfehérvár Enhanced with EU Funding22 November 2010

The reconstruction of the historic inner city of Székesfehérvár is to continue with the third stage. With the assistance contract signed on Friday, the project worth over 2 billion HUF, planned for two years was officially given the green light. In addition to improving the living conditions of residents, the city takes another great step forward in cultivating our historic heritage and developing tourism. The local government has won funding of over 1.7 billion HUF for the project in the framework of the Central Transdanubia Operational Programme, and the entire budget of the project exceeds 2 billion HUF.

The developments will result in the completion of the renewal of the Hiemer-Font-Caraffa House, one of the largest and most beautiful heritage buildings of Székesfehérvár, which will serve as a public building. It is also planned to move the Puppet Museum into the building. A new, multifunctional events hall will be created in the city famous for its vibrant cultural life, and the existing restaurant will be expanded with a comfortable customer area.

Fő (Main) street will be renewed in the project. After the full replacement of the public utility pipes and cables a decorative paving will be laid all the way to the Magyar Király Hotel. These developments and the new decorative flood lighting will not only restore the old romantic feeling of the heart of the city, it will also make movement safer for those with disabilities and for mothers pushing  prams. In addition to tourists and local residents, the city’s small enterprises will probably also benefit from the rehabilitation, since the attractive environment is expected to generate more business for shops, bars and restaurants.

Funds will be available for the lighting of monuments as well; soon tourists visiting Székesfehérvár will be able to enjoy the sights of the city when taking a walk at night. The portal of a restaurant and a store will also be renewed, the paving in Városház square and Liszt Ferenc utca will be grouted, and a fountain will be installed next to Vörösmarty Theatre.

As in the stages completed so far, the leadership of the city has proceeded very carefully this time, as well; they have consulted several designers in order to ensure that the new pedestrian street will be reborn in a way truly matching the historic inner city and serving the residents of the city for many years to come. We will have to wait for less than two years to see the results.

The visual designs can already be seen at www.szekesfehervar.hu.
