Granary to Become Science Exhibition Centre - Futura Project Assistance Contract Signed29 October 2010

The local government of Mosonmagyaróvár received a grant of 1.26 billion HUF from the EU for the implementation of the Futura project to utilise a former granary for the purposes of tourism under the West Pannon Operational Programme. The assistance contract was signed on Thursday.

To be implemented using the Palace of Wonders in Budapest as a model, the interactive scientific exhibition centre will be located in Moson, a district of Mosonmagyaróvár, in the former granary building. The granary is three hundred years old, protected as a national monument, and is one of the buildings that determine the townscape. This highlighted project with a total budget of 1.51 billion HUF will be used to renovate this four-level building.
The granary will also be expanded with two new, cylindrical structures with a diameter of 13 m, the surrounding area will be landscaped and a parking area created.

The central element of the program is the interactive science exhibition, which is also connected to the venue in terms of contents. The other part of the exhibition is a classic “science show”, with all the spectacular functions that come with such shows, a new kind of “show” with a non-traditional approach to promote the study of sciences and disseminate knowledge. The new part of the building will also have a 100-seat lecture room equipped with state-of-the-art educational technology, as well as a temporary exhibition area showing the most recent inventions.

The creation of the first and only interactive scientific exhibition venue of the West Pannon region (the second one in the country) is also expected to attract visitors from beyond the borders of the country, since there is no institution of this type in either of the neighbouring big cities (Vienna and Bratislava).
