HUF 1.4 billion from EU to Fund Development of ELTE Institutions21 October 2010

A bid submitted by Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) was awarded HUF 1.4 billion in EU grants under the Social Renewal Operational Programme to help improve the quality of higher education and promote university research projects. Development totalling over HUF 3 billion can start as a result of the successful bid.

The bid titled “ELTE for Knowledge on a European Scale” was divided into five sub-projects covering natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. The developments can help achieve scientific results of international standing and enable co-operation projects involving a number of disciplines and fields. The programme will add large instruments to the research infrastructure, extend doctoral schools and research capacities, and enable a more effective integration of research results into the technology transfer process.

Sub-projects and implementation sites:
- Large systems in natural sciences and related computer simulations (Natural Science Faculty/Social Science Faculty)
- Sub-microscopic material and life science research (Natural Science Faculty)
- Distributed and multi-core system software technology issues (IT Faculty)
- Inter-cultural dialogue (Faculty of Humanities/Faculty of Law and Political Sciences)
- Social processes and the bio-psycho-social background of lifelong learning (Pedagogy Centre)

The complex development programme is aimed at enhancing the international competitiveness of Eötvös Lóránd University by improving the quality of education and research and strengthening the human and organisational resources for excellence.

The University considers it important to establish research centres of excellence to develop the entire innovation chain beyond the conventional organisational structure of departments and faculties. The implementation of the bid will help reach a critical mass of intellectual potential, and create infrastructure and external networks, which will make the country competitive on the international level in strategically important research fields.

Four projects in the Central Hungary Region have been awarded grants to date in the “Higher Education Quality Improvement through Reseach&Development&Innovation in Education” scheme under the Social Renewal Operational Programme. In addition to ELTE, other grant recipients include Corvinus University of Budapest, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and Semmelweis University. The EU grants awarded to the bids exceed HUF 5 billion.
