Mórahalom Geothermal Cascade System Completed with EU Funding 2 July 2010

The Mórahalom Geothermal Cascade system implemented with EU funding has been officially handed over. As a result of the project, the public administration institutions of Mórahalom are now supplied with cheap, environmentally friendly energy independent of fossil sources (natural gas).

The aim of the geothermal heating system is to supply the local government buildings with geothermal heating that reduces the town’s fossil energy dependence and decreases heating costs, enabling the local council to use the taxpayers’ money more efficiently.

The ratio of renewable energy used by institutions, which in the past used natural gas exclusively, will significantly increase. The project is intended to result in a considerable annual gas saving of over 480,000 cubic metres with a value of 39.8 million HUF net. According to the initial impact assessment, emissions will be decreased by 70 to 80 per cent, which means that a total of 1054 tons of greenhouse gas emissions can be prevented by use of the new system.
