Tramlines No. 1 and 3 upgraded from New Széchenyi Plan funds2011. szeptember 18.
Tramlines No. 1 and 3 are upgraded in the framework of the New Széchenyi Plan. The European Union has contributed to the HUF 41 billion development with HUF 32 billion.
The support agreement was signed in a ceremonial setting on the European Mobility Week in Budapest on 18 September 2011.
The Car-free Weekend was organized as part of the European Mobility Week’s programme in the capital on 17-18 September. On the second day of the event Pál Völner, Secretary of State for Infrastructure of the Ministry of National Development, and Dávid Vitézy, CEO of Budapest Transport Centre, ceremonially signed the supply agreement on the development of tramlines No. 1 and 3.
During the investment both lines will be renewed and made accessible. The southern section of tramline No. 1 will be extended between the Pest-side end of Rákóczi Bridge and Fehérvári Road. In order to speed up tram traffic, tracks in certain sections of the line will be completely replaced; the overhead wire and the power supply network will also be renewed.
Tramline No. 1 will be built further extended from its present terminus at Rákóczi Bridge along the Rákóczi Bridge–Szerémi Road–Hengermalom Road track providing transfer options for the trams on Fehérvári Road. All platforms will be entirely reconstructed in both the existing and the planned sections making it suitable for hosting low-floor trams. In several places elevators and escalators will link the platforms and the subway networks. The platforms will be covered with new roof, and a modern passenger information system will help passengers in finding their way.
On tramline No. 3 the passageways of crossings will be renewed. The Bihari Road single-track line will be replaced with a double-track line in order to increase the maximum number of trams on the line. Similarly to the tram No. 1 all of the platforms will be renewed making them suitable for hosting low-floor trams according to accessible transport requirements. In order to develop public transport, traffic lights capable of detecting trams will be added to the system, which will also reduce travel time.
