New Széchényi Plan to Fund Improvement of Komárom-Almásfüzitő Flood Control Section2012. január 31.
The project with a total budget of HUF 7 billion will improve and reinforce the flood control line which protects valuable industrial, commercial and residential areas, and will expand and reconstruct banks. Set to be completed by the end of 2014 within the New Széchenyi Plan, the project will not only mitigate flood risks, but will also counter the economic disadvantages of restricted railway traffic. The decision to support the project was made at the latest Government meeting.
Much of the Komárom-Almásfüzitő flood control section currently fails to comply with several flood control requirements. The nine-kilometre section is insufficient in terms of both height and cross-section width. Part of the section is formed by the Budapest-Komárom railway bank, where traffic is often restricted or slowed down due to flood control works or leaks in the bank.
Due to these deficiencies, flood damage can only be alleviated with costly operative interventions. It is vital to remove the Hegyeshalom-Budapest railway, of international significance, from the flood control line in order to avoid economic disadvantages by traffic restrictions.
As a result of the project, the flood control lines will increase from 5 to over 14 km to comply with Hungarian and international requirements, substantially cutting flood protection costs. This will provide direct protection to 22,000 inhabitants in Komárom and Almásfüzitő, and indirect protection to 6,300 persons in three additional villages (Dunaalmás, Mocsa, Naszály). In parallel, the lifting of speed limits will improve the reliability, safety and accuracy of international passenger and freight transport by rail.
