Reinforced riverbank wall in Paks2012. május 22.

The reinforcement of the high loess bank in Paks will make houses in the neighbourhood safe homes for their inhabitants for at least half a century. In addition to preventing any slide or crumble, the intervention will avert the risk of damage to the water, electricity and gas pipelines along Main Road No. 6. As was stated at the project closing ceremony in Paks on 3 May 2012, the local government obtained HUF 290 million of grant from the funds of the New Széchenyi Plan to implement this HUF 340 million project.

The inner area of the town has residential properties built on the bank walls, which are at the risk of moving. The main objective of the stabilization of the bank wall between Gárdonyi Géza utca and Deák Ferenc utca was to stop surface movements and to eliminate their damaging effects. The project allowed for the protection of traffic, drainage and residential facilities worth a total of almost HUF 500 million and made traffic safer. As a result, the town will be relieved from the restoration costs of damage that occurred regularly in the past.

Similar projects have been launched or will be launched in the near future along the Danube, in Dunaföldvár, Dunaszekcső, Dunaújváros, Ercsi and Rácalmás, all funded by the application schemes with a total budget of HUF 4.2 billion of the New Széchenyi Plan.

Paks has a track record of successful EU tender applications: the total amount of the town’s 96 supported projects is approximately HUF 5 billion. The largest local developments are aimed at environmental protection: the regional waste management system, built with HUF 1.1 billion of support, is followed by the extension of the sewage treatment plant in the amount of roughly HUF 800 million. The stabilization of the bank walls is the project with the fourth largest support won by the town.
