The Pilisvörösvár - Esztergom Travel Time will decrease by Ten Minutes 1 June 2012

The comprehensive reconstruction of the 53 km long railway line between Budapest and Esztergom, financed by the New Széchenyi Plan, commenced with the handover of the working area. By the summer of 2013, 33 km railway lines will be reconstructed as the first project of the National Infrastructure Development Zrt. Between Pilisvörösvár and Piliscsaba, a 2 km long dual line system will be built to allow trains to pass each other without stopping. Due to the approximately HUF 20 billion development, travel time between Pilisvörösvár and Esztergom will be 10 minutes shorter.

The Budapest – Esztergom railway, used by 14 000 persons per day, is one of the most important sections of the suburban transportation system. The first phase of the development will be completed by the end of 2014, using HUF 71 billion in assistance of the New Széchenyi Plan. A new dual line railway will be built between the Szentendrei road and Pilisvörösvár, capable of supporting trains up to 100 km/h. New P+R parking lots and B+R bicycle storages will be built at a number of stations and train stops (including Dorog, Esztergom and Esztergom-kertváros), platforms will be renewed and transfer possibilities will be significantly improved.

During the press conference of the new development, Pál Völner, Secretary of State on Infrastructure, stated that: more than 600 000 people cross the borders of the capital each day and transportation needs may increase by 30%.  Currently, only one third of the travellers are using trains, local trains or buses. This makes effective development of the service quality of the public transport system an absolute necessity.

More than 120 km railway lines were renovated in Hungary during recent years, using more than HUF 100 billion in assistance.  The still ongoing development of the Budapest – Székesfehérvár line had the greatest impact on the suburban network. Railway developments are in progress or starting in the near future with the total value of HUF 500 billion. Beside the modernisation of the Budapest – Esztergom line, the renovation of the Vác railway station is a priority project as well, said the Secretary of State.

The Passenger Transportation Law, accepted in April, stipulates that developments related to public services and financed by public funds can only be undertaken in accordance with the nationally coherent development concept. The National Railway Development Concept is prepared parallel to and with the same schedule as the National Transport Strategy. Based on traffic predictions, the document will determine the objectives for passenger and freight transportation and the long-term program of the railway infrastructure and the rolling stock for four EU budget cycles. The concept is expected to be discussed by the Government during the fall of 2013, stated Pál Völner.
