Renewal of railway line between Budapest and Esztergom 6 December 2012
The European Commission has adopted the large project titled "Budapest - Esztergom railway line reconstruction stage 1". The cost of the development exceeds HUF 56 billion, and the investment will have been completed by the end of August 2014.
The European Commission welcomed the Hungarian initiative, so the railway line passing through Budapest, Solymar, Pilisvörösvár, Piliscsaba, Pilisjászfalu, Piliscsév, Leányvár, Dorog and Esztergom can be completely renewed.
As part of the investment four new train stops will be built and two existing ones will be replaced. Several of the junctions where the road traffic and the railway lines cross each other will be rebuilt. For example, in Óbuda, Solymar and Pilisvörösvár interchanges with overpass are going to be built, so the road and railway traffic can move faster, without an accident. At the stations and on the lines modern interlocking equipments and central traffic control help the safe and efficient transportation.
In many places, P + R parking places and bicycle storage facilities are built to promote better suburban traffic, for which the appropriate bus connections are also established.
The adopted first stage includes the complete rebuilding of the North Railroad Danube-bridge – Piliscsaba railway line section, in the length of 22 km, and the reconstruction of Piliscsaba - Esztergom railway line section in a length of 21 km. Between Budapest and Pilisvörösvár a second track of nearly 15 km in length will going to be built to meet the increased traffic.
After the reconstruction the trains will be able to travel by 80 to 100 km/h on certain sections of the line. Electrification of the railway section will take place in stage 2 of the project.
